COMMITTEES

HOW TO JOIN A COMMITTEE

Become an active member (pay dues and come to meetings) of the bergen naacp.  Why join a committee ?  Our organization can help enhance the lives of people in Bergen County – our programs support voting, and local programs that affect African Americans in the Bergen County area.

ACT-SO

Our year-long enrichment program is designed to guide our African American high school students to become successful, productive members of society while helping to build confidence and a character of excellence by recognizing, preparing and rewarding them for their scholastic and artistic excellence.  We also prepare our ACT-SO students for an annual statewide competition held each spring. The students are encouraged to compete in up to three categories with sub-categories in STEM, Humanities, Visual Arts, Performing Arts & Business. First place winners earn a free trip to the National ACT-SO Competition held each July.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The principal objective of the Economic Development Committee is to promote the growth of entrepreneurship among Africa Americans, and increase employment opportunities with private and public entities.The Economic Development Committee shall implement local efforts and support national programs to preserve and expand economic empowerment among African Americans and other communities of color.

EDUCATION

The Committee on Education shall: (1) seek to eliminate segregation and other discriminatory practices in public education; (2) study local educational conditions affecting minority groups; (3)investigate the public school system and school zoning; (4) familiarize itself with textbook material used in the school and seek to eliminate material there from which is racially derogatory; (5) seek to stimulate school attendance; (6) keep informed of school conditions and strive to correct abuses where found and; (7) aim to be a center of popular education on the race question and on the work of the association.

MEMBERSHIP

The Membership Committee works throughout the year to maintain and increase the membership of the Association.  Committee members are responsible for planning and organizing the annual membership campaign; and be responsible on a continuous basis,  solicit new members and secure membership renewals.

RELIGIOUS AFFAIRS

The Religious Affairs Committee shall include ministerial and lay religious leaders who are members of the branch.  It shall: (1) promote an educational program designed to give a moral and ethical interpretation to the civil rights struggle; (2) interpret the work of the Association to organized religious groups of all faiths; (3) enlist the support of such organized religious groups for membership, fund raising and the struggle for equality and full civil rights; and (4) provide resource assistance for religious education and social action activities associated with the improvement of race relations.

COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT

The Committee on Cummunity Coordination seeks to enlist the support of other community organizations on issues affecting the interests of African Americans and other communities of color.

YOUTH COUNCIL

We want to ensure a society in which all individuals have equal rights without discrimination based on race by developing a new generation of civil rights and community leaders.
We aim to: Inform youth of the problems affecting African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities, advance the economic, educational, social, and political status of African Americans and other racial and ethnic minorities, and their harmonious cooperation with other peoples, stimulate an appreciation of the African Diaspora and other people of color
contribution to civilization, & develop an intelligent, effective youth leadership.  Join Here
